Christian Maychack
Christian Maychack's sculptures utilize unconventional materials in an attempt to reveal the manner in which people connect to the spaces around them. His work is a complex commentary on the culture of objects, from whittled body parts to furniture that toes a line between functionality and personality.
I construct abstract, seemingly animated forms where the concepts of breakdown and growth are inseparable. They are objects in transition, as if they are perpetually restructuring themselves to become something wholly different. I give this sense of transformation by creating visual transitions such as color fades, slow changes in scale and texture, and the blending of architecture and object. To this end I also reference the common visual language of 3D rendering technologies and animation. By using this familiarity of visual language and by making the work anthropomorphic, I attempt to give the viewer an empathetic connection to the object. I present something for the audience to project their own desires onto.
